At Chessell Woodyard, we don’t just supply firewood. We also help bring people’s home and garden visions to life with high-quality, sustainably sourced timber, crafted right here on the Isle of Wight.
Turning a Garden Idea into Reality
Recently, a customer visited our showroom looking to transform their garden. They had a clear idea in mind but needed help turning that vision into a practical design.
After discussing their plans, the idea quickly took shape on paper — a sleeper-style garden feature, with sleepers stood upright and cascading in length as they wrapped around the space, dropping in even measurements to create a stylish and functional retaining wall.
Planning the Perfect Sleeper Cut List
Once the design was agreed, Gavin worked out the precise measurements to ensure the customer received exactly what they needed — without excess timber or unnecessary waste.
He liaised with our main yard to confirm the lengths of the natural logs we had in stock, allowing each sleeper to be cut as efficiently as possible. By carefully calculating each cut, Gavin produced a detailed cut list, which was thoroughly checked to maximise yield from every sleeper.

Selecting the Best Timber
The job was then passed to our Yard Supervisor, Simi, who reviewed the measurements and selected the most suitable logs for the project. His focus was on getting the best result from each piece of timber while keeping waste to an absolute minimum.
The selected logs were moved to our saw, where Marcin carefully cut the full-length sleepers to size. Each cut was inspected to ensure the timber remained solid, free from splits, and suitable for long-term outdoor use.
The finished sleepers were neatly stacked with spacers, ensuring clean, crisp cuts and consistent sizing before moving on to the next stage.
Precision Cutting for a Perfect Fit
Using our crosscut saw, the sleepers were then cut down to their required individual lengths. The cut list was checked and double-checked throughout the process to ensure accuracy and avoid unnecessary re-cuts.
Each sleeper was measured carefully, with waste kept to a minimum, and every completed cut was marked off the list to ensure the correct quantities were produced.
Once complete, all pieces were laid out in size order and inspected again to confirm they met the customer’s specifications and our own quality standards.
Ready for Delivery
With the sleepers finished, stored safely, and kept dry, the customer was contacted to arrange delivery. On loading day, the timber was visually inspected one final time before leaving the yard.
At Chessell Woodyard, we take pride in the quality of our timber. At every stage of the process — from planning and cutting to final delivery — our sleepers are checked to ensure they meet the standards we would expect for our own homes and gardens.
